Lakeland School Counseling

Lakeland Jr./Sr. High School Counseling Department

Who We Are:

LHS has two full-time School Counselors, Dawn deQuevedo and Ellie Wengert. The LHS School Counselors work equally in the domains of
academic support, career/college exploration, and social/emotional development, acknowledging that success or failure in one domain can impact the success or failure within another. The LHS School Counselors work with the ultimate goal of improving outcomes for all students.

Lakeland Jr./Sr. High School Counseling Mission Statement
In accordance with the Lakeland School District’s mission statement, we aim to provide meaningful and relevant educational resources and opportunities to assist students in developing lifelong academic and social/emotional learning skills, career readiness, and global awareness in an ever changing society. The programs implemented focus on maximizing student success in a safe and nurturing environment, while encouraging all students to explore future college and career goals and to increase self-efficacy.

What Is School Counseling?
School counselors design and deliver school counseling programs that improve student outcomes. They lead, advocate, and collaborate to promote equity and access for all students by connecting their school counseling program to the school’s academic mission and school improvement plan. They uphold the ethical and professional standards of The American School Counselors Association (ASCA), and promote the development of the school counseling program based on the following areas of the ASCA National Model: define, deliver, manage and assess.

How We Support Students:
  • Academic planning and goal setting
  • Classroom lessons focused on student success skills
  • Short-term counseling and referrals for long-term support
  • Collaboration with families, teachers, administrators, and community partners
  • Advocacy for students in IEPs and other student-focused meetings
  • Data-driven support to identify and address student needs
  • Systems-level advocacy to improve equity, access, and opportunities for all students
