Lakeland Jr./Sr. High School Counselors
LHS has two full-time School Counselors, Dawn deQuevedo and Zachary Watters. The LHS School Counselors work equally in the domains of academic support, career/college exploration, and social/emotional development, acknowledging that success or failure in one domain can impact the success or failure within another. The LHS School Counselors work with the ultimate goal of improving outcomes for all students.
Lakeland Jr./Sr. High School Counseling Mission Statement
The School Counseling Department, in accordance with the Lakeland School District’s mission statement, aims to provide meaningful and relevant educational resources and opportunities to assist students in developing lifelong academic and social/emotional learning skills, career readiness, and global awareness in an ever changing society. The programs implemented focus on maximizing student success in a safe and nurturing environment, while encouraging all students to explore future college and career goals and to increase self-efficacy.
What Is School Counseling?
School counselors design and deliver school counseling programs that improve student outcomes. They lead, advocate, and collaborate to promote equity and access for all students by connecting their school counseling program to the school’s academic mission and school improvement plan. They uphold the ethical and professional standards of The American School Counselors Association (ASCA), and promote the development of the school counseling program based on the following areas of the ASCA National Model: define, deliver, manage and assess.
Some things that school counselors do include:
individual student academic planning and goal setting
school counseling classroom lessons based on student success standards
short-term counseling to students
referrals for long-term support
collaboration with families/teachers/administrators/community for student success
advocacy for students at individual education plan meetings and other student-focused meetings
data analysis to identify student issues, needs, and challenges
act as a systems change agent to improve equity and access, achievement, and opportunities for all students

Meet The Counseling Team
The counseling department at Lakeland Junior Senior High School consists of two counselors and a counseling secretary. The counseling department services all students in grades 7-12
Mrs. deQuevedoMrs. deQuevedo is the counselor for the classes of 2026, 2028 & 2030. She has been a school counselor at Lakeland since 1998 and worked from 1993-98 in college admissions at the University of Scranton. Mrs. deQuevedo has a B.S. in Human Services with a concentration in Human Development and an M.S. in School Counseling. She earned her degrees at the University of Scranton. Mrs. deQuevedo is a member of School Counselors of NEPA, and currently serves as the Pennsylvania Tourette Syndrome Alliance (PATSA) board president. She is an educational volunteer with the Tourette Association of America.

Ms. WeaverMs. Weaver is the High School Counseling Secretary. She has many responsibilities that are difficult to define. She greets students, schedules appointments, handles paperwork, issues working papers, and so much more. She genuinely keeps the department together!

Mr. WattersMr. Watters is the counselor for the classes of 2025, 2027, and 2029. Mr. Watters has been working at Lakeland since 2020, and before that worked as an elementary school counselor in the South Williamsport School District. He received his Bachelor's Degree in Psychology with a minor in Human Development and Family Studies from Penn State, and his Master's Degree in School Counseling from The University of Scranton. Mr. Watters is a Past President of School Counselor's of NEPA, is the Assistant Chair for the Pennsylvania School Counselors Association (PSCA) Board of Directors, and is a member of the American School Counselors Association (ASCA).
