Mental Health Resources/SEL

What Is Social Emotional Learning (SEL)?

There's no doubt that life can be very challenging at times for our students, their families, and our staff. Through several surveys to students, faculty, and the wider Lakeland community as a whole, one thing stood out above the rest: we all need to feel like we belong in our community in order for us to be as successful as we can be. That's where SEL comes in.

SEL focuses on five areas: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision Making. During the pandemic, a team at Lakeland created lessons that were based in these five areas and delivered weekly. Following that, much research was done in an effort to bring in a curriculum to keep up with SEL.

This research has brought a new program to Lakeland called Character Strong. Its ideals, activities, and community building approach will be utilized both in and out of classrooms with the number one goal of improving student and staff social & emotional well-being. In the end, this will improve Lakeland's school climate, and make the community one that everyone truly wants to be a part of.

In addition to our SEL activities at the school, there are many resources available to students and families. Some of them are linked below, and more will be added as they come to our attention!
